Cascade cultivation of microorganisms

Investigation of bacterial culture at different growth stages, measurements of kinetics of bacterial growth and product formation, investigation of kinetics of biodegradation and biotransformation processes are typical problems in many scientific studies and in developments of optimized industrial technologies. Traditional fermentation equipment used in such studies is timeconsuming and unprofitable.

The system "Cascade" is designed to reduce experiment time and to improve reproducibility of experiments. The system realizes a new cultivation mode, named cascade cultivation. The fermentation module of the system is composed of a cascade of mini-bioreactors (0.5 to 3 L) sequentialy connected with each other. The system has also sterilization and control modules.

The major principal distinction of the method realized in the "Cascad" system from the traditional methods is that the studied phases of a biological process, for example, points on the microorganism growth curve, constantly exist through all the experiment time. This mode is achieved by means of a cascade flow of the culture liquid through the bioreactors. The time growth curve turns to be unfolded in space and required phases of the process are always accessible for study. A researcher can easily inject various agents, take samples and explore effects of various agents on the process.

Figure 1 shows a biotechnological system with a fermentation module consisting of three 0.5 L bioreactors. Figure 2 demonstrates a fermentation module consisting of three 3L bioreactors mounted in horizontal position.
